TELL YOUR FRIENDS! EXCITING WORKSHOPS – CABIN FEVER REGISTRATION CONTINUES

Over the past 8 1/2 years, we have striven to bring you some of the best and brightest artist/instructors available to Cabin Fever and Master Class Camp.  Cabin Fever, in its 9th year is no different and once again, a premier event offering workshops from:  LISA PAVELKA, MAUREEN CARLSON, DAYLE DOROSHOW, NANCY ENNIS, LISA HANEY, LINDLY HAUNANI, ANKE HUMPERT, DOREEN KASSEL, ROBERT LIU, JANA LEHMANN, ANN and KAREN MITCHELL, NAN ROCHE, LYNNE ANN SCHWARZENBERG, and EUGENA TOPINA.  Registration continues for all attendees – click here to register.

Some have asked about the change in format.  The fact is, we listened to what our attendees were requesting – longer classes from more instructors.  The new format offers more full-day workshops and fewer 4-hour workshops with additional class time at a lower fee – bringing attendees more bang for their buck!  If you have questions about the format, just write us – we’ll answer your inquiries as quickly as possible.

Lisa Pavelka, who has brought the polymer community many useful tools and techniques, will be teaching several workshops and will be honored with the Creative Pioneer and Innovator Award for her contributions over the years. Last year’s honoree, Maureen Carlson, will present the award and will also be teaching workshops at the event.  Click here to find out more on the workshops being offered.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  Yes, I am still here and haven’t forgotten…we sometimes just have to roll with the punches and take things as we can.

The holidays may have come and gone, but the feelings of giving continue to linger.  This was the first Christmas without my Mom and her absence continues to leave a hole in my life.  But, she was always about giving, as was my Dad, to anyone in need and her charitable ways continue through her children.

I am sending warm wishes to each of you for the coming year and praying that it is a year of renewal and good changes for you. This past year hit many of us hard and was a year of big changes for me but I am looking for a brighter year in 2014 with so many possibilities.

Good news is, as we enter this new year, registrations for CFCF 2014 from Feb. 12-19 continue to come in even this close to the event and we still have availability in many of the workshops.  Availability is listed at the end of this post for those who are interested.

The supply lists, FAQs sheet, tribute form (Sarah Shriver and Elise Winters are the 2014 Creative Pioneer and Innovator Award Recipients and we will be having a special tribute to Gwen Gibson) and auction donation documents are available.  Please don’t hesitate to email me with any questions you may have.
A reminder: pre-conference workshops are stand-alone and can be taken independently.  We have just opened up the conference for “day-trippers” – fee is $170 and includes two 4-hour workshops and admittance to the Tuesday evening celebration.  Workshops do not need to be taken on the same day.
Be certain to follow us on our blog to get the latest on our upcoming events: www.polymerclayfests.wordpress.com

Christian and Maureen hard at work

Registrations have been rolling in and we’ve been on the road again.  Spent a few days with Maureen Carlson and her family and friends at Maureen Carlson’s Center for Creative Arts in Jordan, MN.  If you’ve never been, you don’t know what you are missing. We met some of her local friends/artists who meet at Maureen’s every Friday for a gourmet pot luck dinner and some quality crafting time with friends.  Daughter, Renee, made some incredibly tasty crock pot oatmeal for breakfast and her husband, Dan, spent some time entertaining my son, Christian, when he wasn’t busy making Maureen’s face molds.   I’m hoping to schedule a retreat for me and some of my besties sometime in 2014.  Contact Maureen directly here to schedule your time for a little R and Arts!  And thank you, Maureen and family, for a wonderful visit.

We also attended my brother’s wedding in Minneapolis and had a memorable time with family. Dancing and much celebration and revelry going on.  It was a happy time for all and Christian became an official honorary member of the band.  He was awarded the best dancer of the evening award from the band’s lead singer.

CFCF 2014: REMEMBERING AN INNOVATOR – GWEN GIBSON

28 09 2013
Gwen Gibson 1934-2013

Gwen Gibson 1934-2013

As the Summer closes and Fall begins, I look back and think about why we are here. What happens as the seasons of our lives change?  Earlier this week, seasons changed in the polymer world as a true icon left us. Gwen Gibson (1934-2013) was truly an innovator, not only in the world of polymer, but in the world of the creative and inspiring spirit.  In her words, she had  “An appetite for fresh experience and the need to keep moving (to) take me places I would never have imagined beforehand. Because I find the unknown tempting, I’m often drawn to projects that have no predictable outcome…” We lost the physical person of Gwen this week on September 24 at 4PM PDT, but her spirit and influence will live on, driving many to experiment in their work and take the next step, not knowing where it will lead, but knowing that they will enjoy the journey getting there. With the approval of her husband, Jerry, we will be paying tribute to

Gwen during the CFCF 2014 evening celebration, including awarding a CFCF creative scholarship in Gwen’s honor.  Dayle Doroshow, Sarah Shriver, and some of Gwen’s other friends will share with us many good memories about her gentle spirit and creative genius.  In addition, attendees are invited to make Gwen-inspired beads to donate and trade. If you’d like to help us celebrate Gwen’s life and to join us for one, two or up to eight days of creative fun and celebration, click HERE to download the registration form and workshop descriptions.  Then, warm up your clay, put on your thinking cap and let your imagination take you to where you’ve never been before.

SHRIVER Intricate Kaleidoscope

SHRIVER Intricate Kaleidoscope

First, I sincerely thank you all for your patience these past couple of months and in the months to come as I deal with some important family issues.  But, I have not forgotten about you…it’s just taking me a little longer these days to get the work done and out. The good news is we completed our first Master Class Camp in between trips to Wisconsin and it was a great success.  Dates are already set for MCC 2014 and whew, I’m exhausted! More good news is that I am certain that the wait for CFCF 2014 info will be worth it. First, we have two honorees this year for the Creative Pioneer and Innovator Award.  Congratulations to Sarah Shriver and Elise Winters.  They have both, in their own way, contributed so much to the polymer community and we are excited to be able to recognize their contributions at the Awards Celebration on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 … more to come on this. Below is the line-up for CFCF 2014.  We’ve added a couple of pre-pre-conference workshops for those who like longer classes and our favorite 4-hour workshops for those who like to get the most from their travels.  Note:  workshops will be held simultaneously.

MCC 2013: DISS THE CREATIVE FUNK – $40 DISCOUNT STILL AVAILABLE

30 05 2013

PENTAX ImageThat’s right…time to diss that funk.  If you are in a creative slump and have some spare time available in July, come join the Master instructors in Laurel, MD and give that funk the bunk!

I feel like I have been in a creative funk for over three years – could have something to do with my almost three-year-old son, but my mind has been focused on toys and books and not on what I can create next.  However, a few weeks ago I attended the Baltimore Bead Society meeting to see a presentation by Jeffrey Lloyd Dever.  Jeff  modified the presentation he had given in Atlanta about using everyday and found objects to make art.  His work was incredibly intriguing and seductive.  I hoped that I could get just a fraction of his creative spark.  Then a few days ago, I picked up some interesting children’s books and started looking at the construction of my son’s toy trucks and BAMMM! the light bulb went on.  I jotted my ideas down on paper – now to find the time to actually sit down and work them through is another story.

The gist is – if you look all around you and keep an open mind the ideas will come.  The MCC has classes for everyone — sculpting, caning, construction, and a unique class on heat forming bamboo.  Let the Masters help you and GROW those ideas into something exceptional.

Spaces still available in all classes (except Jeffrey Lloyd Dever.)  Check out class info and registration form HERE.

MCC 2013: SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTOR CAROL SIMMONS

24 05 2013

Carol Simmons VeneersCarol Simmons has fast become one of the experts in the community for conceptualizing and developing beautiful kaleidoscope canes.  We are fortunate to have her join us to teach at the Master Class Camp in Laurel, Maryland July 28-29, 2013.  She will present an intensive 2-day version of: Covering Uncovered: Exploring Kaleidoscope Cane Veneers.

According to Carol, her fascination with polymer clay began in 1995 when she purchased a Fimo Clay assortment gift for a niece and Carol herself couldn’t stop playing with it. It’s no surprise that she love’s color and the process of mixing colors. She challenges herself  to develop new color combinations outside her comfort zone.  These self-induced challenges have lead her to create some undeniably beautiful canes and win her some awards.

She is passionate about bringing the versatility of polymer to others and enjoys teaching as much as creating – even as a young girl she organized a neighborhood Arts and Crafts club so she could teach.  Her teaching has taken her across the country and all over the world.  She is coming to the Washington, DC area for the first time…don’t miss this opportunity. CLS-pic

Lindly Haunani Color Collage

Are you color challenged when it comes to your polymer work?  Well, we’ve got something just for you.  If you’ve never taken a color class from Lindly, this is your chance.  She has modified and updated her traditional color workshop and put a different spin on it just for MCC 2013.

But, did you know that Lindly’s roots go way back in the polymer clay world?   Lindly is a founding member of the Potomac Polymer Clay Guild as well as the National Polymer Clay Guild.  She began teaching workshops way back in 1990 and continues to enjoy traveling around the world to lecture and inspire other artists.

Her passion for food and cooking  provide a basis for her inspiration and is often expressed via color, construction techniques and form.  Her work is part of the permanent collections of the Racine Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Newark Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Meinge International Museum in San Diego. She has a BFA in Printmaking from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA.

She is co-author of two books, the first with Pierrette Ashcroft,  Artist’s at Work: Polymer Clay Comes of Age and her latest book  Color Inspirations with Maggie Maggio.   Color Inspirations has quickly become the color reference manual for the polymer community and artists working in other mediums. She has starred in several video workshops and has been featured in numerous polymer and arts magazines, including Bead and Button Magazine.  Her work has appeared in more than fifty invitational and juried shows and was awarded the prestigious Niche Award in 2009. She also received the Creative Pioneer and Innovator Award at CFCF’s February 2013 Conference in Laurel, MD.

MASTER CLASS CAMP DISCOUNT EXTENDED THROUGH JUNE 15! If you are like me, you are a procrastinator.  I most often have the best of intentions, but continually say to myself, oh, I’ll get to that tomorrow.  NOT!  It’s incredible how many times I’ve done this over the course of my lifetime, and I’ve missed out on some great opportunities because of it.  Usually can’t go back, so I’ve spent the last year trying more diligently to get things done as they need to be done.

If this reminds you of yourself, don’t fret…we are going to help you take care of that.  Have you registered for the Master Class Camp(MCC)yet? If you have been on the fence, we appreciate that and want to give you another opportunity to register at the discounted rate, so we’ve extended the $40 discount per class til June 15th!
