Have you seen what Tracy Holmes has been up to? WOW!  She’s got a great article in the Summer issue of The Polymer Arts Magazine AND she will be debuting her new colour cards during her 2-day workshop at right here in Maryland during Master Class Camp in July.  Tracy’s color and Dan Cormier’s Matrix Cane workshop sounds like a terrific combination!

GETTING YOUR WORK TO WHERE YOU WANT IT TO BE…ALWAYS LEARNING AND GROWING

15 05 2015

KASSEL – POUF necklace

We can see examples all over the internet of work from those who are just starting out (where we were all at one time) to those who have moved their work to the next level and above and are considered “professional” artists.  The Master Class Camp in July is not meant to intimidate, but to help you grow in your art.

One artist whose work I’ve seen grow and change so much over the last few years is Doreen Gay-Kassel.  She is my friend but also a very talented artist who has continued to amaze and surprise me with the extent of her work.  She will be teaching a 2-day workshop on this new technique in July. You can see more on her 2-day workshop here https://polymerclayfests.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/…/mcc-2015… and REGISTER online herehttps://creativeartsfests.wufoo.com/forms/znmjqnl176o6ft/

MCC 2015: BASKETS AND MATRIX – COMPLEXITIES SIMPLIFIED

1 05 2015

I am so very excited to have two of the leading men in the polymer world, Jeffrey Lloyd Dever and Dan Cormier, joining us again for Master Class Camp.  These two have mastered their look and feel – in other words, their work is easily recognizable.

Hope from Heart of Darkness

DEVER – HOPE FROM HEART OF DARKNESS

Jeff is a full-time business man, heading up a graphic design business with his wife, Kay.  He is an award winning artist and has his work displayed in museums and galleries around the country.  He returns to MCC and brings us his miniature baskets combined with hollow ware  for jewelry.  The detail is exquisite and the colors pop!  He doesn’t teach often, so get him while you can!   Updated workshop information is here.  Register online for Jeffrey’s workshop here.

CORMIER - MATRIX CANE

CORMIER – MATRIX CANE

Dan Cormier is another master.  He has been working in polymer for decades and has become known as a perfectionist – and his work shows it.  He will be visiting us once again all the way from Mexico and if we are lucky, we’ll have a chance to visit with his son, Griffin.  Dan has taken his Matrix cane technique to the max and I am very excited to see what he does this year using his signature templates, dies, and cutter.   Updated workshop information is here.  Register online for Dan’s workshop here.

MCC 2015: FOR EXPLORATION AND THE COLOR INQUISITIVE

23 04 2015

I’ve experimented with color since childhood, whether with crayons, paints, and in the last 15 years – polymer.  However, I know that there is always more to learn and and many techniques used to achieve the final rainbow of colors.

HAUNANI - EDIBLE COLORS

HAUNANI – EDIBLE COLORS

At MCC 2015, you will have two workshops specifically designed to test and explore your personal color palletes.  Lindly Haunani is one of the best in the polymer world for working out your color spectrum.  Her new workshop, Incredible Almost Edible Color, will take you to from zero to sixty in your color pallete.  These luscious colors can make many hungry to taste test their own recipes. Thanks to Cynthia Tinapple at PCD yesterday, Lindly’s workshop is filling fast.  If you want in, register today! Updated workshop information is here.   Online registration can be found here.

HOLMES - PICK-A-COLOUR

HOLMES – PICK-A-COLOUR

Tracy Holmes, partner to Dan Cormier, is not new to polymer, but she is new to teaching at Master Class Camp.  I was intrigued last summer when Tracy taught an impromptu mini-color workshop at MCC 2014, so I asked her to expand on it and invited her to teach this year.  Tracy and Dan have been working for years to develop different color palletes that marry nicely with his bead shapes.  They have certainly accomplished that.  Join Tracy and learn another way to experiment with color. Updated workshop information is here.  Online registration can be found here.

CFCAF 2015: WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? INSPIRATION ABOUNDS!

10 11 2014

We, as artists, crafters, creators, draw inspiration for our art from all around us. Some of us are tactile, others more visceral. Some see lines and shapes while others see colors that inspire them.

No matter, we all draw from different places, but need that something to ignite that “creative spark.”  Each year, as I plan for Cabin Fever, I consider carefully the mix of instructors who will be teaching.  The variety of instruction offered is important – most are not coming just to learn from one instructor, but several.  What is it that draws you to their work?  How do you connect with it?

Let’s face it, we don’t all want to do just caning, or just sculpture, or just surface treatments.  So, who will inspire you this year?  Let’s begin with sculpture:

CARLSON - TO HAVE AND TO HOLD

CARLSON – TO HAVE AND TO HOLD

Maureen Carlson, with storytelling adventures and development of whimsical her characters?

DOROSHOW - GARDEN BOOK3

DOROSHOW – GARDEN BOOK3

Dayle Doroshow, with her tales of France, fields of flowers and images of simpler times?

FRIESEN - DRAMATIC ADORNMENTS

FRIESEN – DRAMATIC ADORNMENTS

Or Christi Friesen with her dramatic flowing creations and gentle waves of color?

Cabin Fever has it all – you just need to pick and choose carefully.

CFCAF 2015: A TRADITION CONTINUES – ARE YOU IN and WILL YOU HELP??

6 11 2014

There are two things that happen each year at Cabin Fever that make it unique over any other Creative Arts event out there.  First, we honor one or more of those in our community who have paved the way for many. In 2015, we hope you will join us to help honor Maureen Carlson of WeeFolk and Maureen Carlson’s Center for the Arts in Jordan, MN as she received the Creative Pioneer and Innovator Award for 2015.  Since 2009, we’ve been honoring some of these pioneers in the polymer world, those who came before many of us and tested the waters and the medium, bringing good and bad results to the forefront so the rest of us can learn from their triumphs and mistakes.  Maureen designed many of the face molds that we began using for doll-making, etc.  Maureen will be teaching a two-day workshop in addition to two 4-hour workshops.  Her creative wit and reflection as she inspires others is worth its weight in gold.  You can read more about her story in an upcoming post.

The second happening at Cabin Fever is the ability to participate in the auction which raises funds for non-profit organizations close to our heart.  In 2015, we will be raising funds for two charities that will benefit some in our own community.  The  first is the Prison Project – organized by Cynthia Tinapple, and raising funds for childhood cancer patients, including Baby Cullen, Kim Cavender’s grandson who is fighting a rare form of brain cancer.

Here is a sneak peak of some of the highlights you will be part of when you REGISTER HERE.

1. You will help us to celebrate our 8th year of bringing you not one, not two, not even three guest artists, but 17 instructors from around the country and around the world.  Yes, CFCAF has been an international event from our very first year!

2. You will have your choice of full-day workshops or half-day workshops or better yet, BOTH – the best of both worlds.  Who are the instructors?    Cabin Fever Creative Arts Fest 2015 Instructors include: Maureen Carlson, Jana Roberts Benzon, Robert Dancik, Dayle Doroshow, Christi Friesen, Lindly Haunani, Anke Humpert, Doreen Kassel, Randee Ketzel, Ann and Karen Mitchell, Melanie Muir, Kathryn Jo Ottman, Nan Roche, Marie Segal, Eugena Topina, and Teri Walters.

3. Be one of the first 50 to register and receive a commemorative canvas goody bag filled with lots of treats from suppliers and organizers.

DON’T WAIT AND BE LEFT OUT IN THE COLD – REGISTER HERE NOW!

Mark your calendar now to attend the 8th year of Cabin Fever!  CFCAF 2015 dates are February 12 – 18, 2015 at the Holiday Inn West, Laurel, Maryland.  Each year, we try to bring a great mix of instructors as we also honor one of the pioneers in the field.  2015 will be no different.  We’ve got a great line-up of instructors in addition to a well-deserving honoree, Maureen Peck Carlson.

2015 Instructors include: Maureen Carlson, Jana Roberts Benzon, Robert Dancik, Dayle Doroshow, Christi Friesen, Lindly Haunani, Anke Humpert, Doreen Kassel, Randee Ketzel, Melanie Muir, Kathryn Jo Ottman, Nan Roche, Sarah Shriver, Marie Segal, Eugena Topina, and Teri Walters.

Once again, we will have full-day pre-conference workshops and 4-hour conference workshops, allowing you to get a “taste” of what more instructors have to offer.  Above is a sampling of photos of some of the workshops that will be offered.  Be certain to stay tuned to be one of the first to register.

MCC 2014: INTRIGUED BY TRANSLUCENT? JOIN MARIE SEGAL OR PONSAWAN SILA FOR CLASS

12 05 2014

Confused by translucent clay too?  Well, Marie Segal and Ponsawan Sila have both been working and experimenting with translucent clays and will bring their lessons learned to their workshops at Master Class Camp.  Marie, who has been working with polymer for decades, has recently been doing some extensive experimenting and is bringing what she has learned to her class.  I just love the DELFT~!

Ponsawan loves using inks with Pardo translucent clay.  Her results are stunning especially with her wirework.  She was a finalist in the IPCA Progress and Possibilities competition this year.  This will be Pons’ first time teaching at a Creative Arts Fest event and we are so pleased to have her join us.  Click below to register for her 2-day wire and polymer workshop.  For more of Ponsawan’s work, visit her Flickr site here and here.

Space is still available in both workshops and the discount still applies.  Pay have now and the other by June 15th…

Did you get a gift certificate to Master Class Camp for Mother’s Day?  No???  Well, it’s never too late to ask…come join us!

Master Class Camp is not for Master artisans.  It is for artist like you and me who want to learn new techniques and take their work to the next level.  All of our instructors are teaching something unique…something that identifies them.  Many polymer artists out there are unsure of how to use translucent clay.  Is it just to be used for background to flower canes?  Can color be added to it?  If so, what should you use for color?

CFCF 2014: HAPPY NEW YEAR! REGISTRATIONS CONTINUE

4 01 2014
KASSEL Animal Angel Pendant

KASSEL Animal Angel Pendant

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  Yes, I am still here and haven’t forgotten…we sometimes just have to roll with the punches and take things as we can.

The holidays may have come and gone, but the feelings of giving continue to linger.  This was the first Christmas without my Mom and her absence continues to leave a hole in my life.  But, she was always about giving, as was my Dad, to anyone in need and her charitable ways continue through her children.

I am sending warm wishes to each of you for the coming year and praying that it is a year of renewal and good changes for you. This past year hit many of us hard and was a year of big changes for me but I am looking for a brighter year in 2014 with so many possibilities.

Good news is, as we enter this new year, registrations for CFCF 2014 from Feb. 12-19 continue to come in even this close to the event and we still have availability in many of the workshops.  Availability is listed at the end of this post for those who are interested.

The supply lists, FAQs sheet, tribute form (Sarah Shriver and Elise Winters are the 2014 Creative Pioneer and Innovator Award Recipients and we will be having a special tribute to Gwen Gibson) and auction donation documents are available.  Please don’t hesitate to email me with any questions you may have.
A reminder: pre-conference workshops are stand-alone and can be taken independently.  We have just opened up the conference for “day-trippers” – fee is $170 and includes two 4-hour workshops and admittance to the Tuesday evening celebration.  Workshops do not need to be taken on the same day.
Be certain to follow us on our blog to get the latest on our upcoming events: www.polymerclayfests.wordpress.com
